LoRaWAN is a network protocol based upon LoRa (Long Range) modulation and radio technology. LoRaWAN is the most widespread LPWAN (Low Power Wide-Area Network) nowadays and LPWAN networks are a perfect match for the IoT needs since they use very low power (battery powered) and still cover long ranges, the compromise being its relatively lower data rate.
LoRaWAN technology can be used to make private or public networks, it has great propagation and ranges above 15 km, several thousand sensors per gateway can be connected and it’s an open standard with a lot of big industry players and a wide ecosystem of partners and IoT solutions.
Capacity: Up to 50 kbit/s per GW
Power consumption: Very low
Frequency: Unlicensed
Range: 15+ km rural, 2+ km urban
